Vetting Guild Applications, Ninjas, and Revenge

There are a lot of things to consider about running a guild, and there is a lot of work that goes into being successful at it.  Many hours and hard work outside of the regular raiding times are spent in recruiting, reviewing strats, defining policies, building websites, and reviewing applications. I wanted to share with you guys the importance of properly reviewing applications as if they were real resumes for any job.  Checking someones background really isnt that difficult and the story I am about to share I hope will promote more people to delve a little bit deeper into the background of those applying to their guilds.

One of the many amazing things about Warcraft to me is the unwritten code of conduct, and self policing nature of the people who play the game. We have to constantly keep our selves in check for fear of being flamed or labeled on our own servers that we may be a ninja, or unpleasant to play with. We often spend large amounts of gold at the auction house on mats and then search through tells for a player who we may never have spoken with to trade those mats with in good faith that they will craft the desired item and return it to us. Sometimes though there are players or circumstances that tempt players to violate this code and take advantage of other players, or even their own guild. These players then think they have gotten away swiftly as they transfer to a new server and apply to a new guild who hasn’t got a clue that they just absorbed they type of player that they don’t want amongst them.

This happened quite some time ago to my guild Nepentheum, we had a guy named Izirii who played a warlock and tried to do the same above mentioned scenario. What makes it quite different is that Izirii was actually an officer in our guild which gave him complete access to almost everything, we trusted him as a model member of our guild as well always showing up on time, farming mats, etc.  One day however we log into the game only to be horrified that we had been the lucky visitor of a ninja who took a large amount of valuables from the G-Bank, and Izirii had mysteriously G-Quit. As we checked the logs of the G-Bank our suspicions were realized that Izirii was the culprit, and he had made a clean get away. This didn’t put much of a stutter in our step however as we have an awesome group of guildies to help farm and a large amount of gold to make up for any immediate needs the guild had. We tallied our losses and just figured we would never her from Izirii again until circumstances brought our paths across each other one more time.

A couple weeks after the Izirii incident as Nepentheum was tromping down progression street, Soulibruss our Guild Master received a tell from someone interested in applying to the guild saying he was referred by none other than our good friend Izirii. Souli as we call him being the sly dog that he is didnt just begin to flame the would be applicant but instead began to show interest in hopes of figuring out Izirii’s location or what alt he had playing on since he had obviously not shown his face on our server since his infraction. So as the conversation progressed and Souli was updating us through G-Chat on what was happening as we all watched closely to see what was about to unfold.

Souli invited the app into vent channel and began the interview process we have as usual without bringing anything up about what had happened until the app decided to start talking about Izirii himself and Souli then began to tell him that Iz was not a good reference to be bringing to the interview.  This is where the interview took a turn and Souli found out that he was not the actual interviewer in this situation but the interviewee. It turns out the app was actual a guild officer from another server where Izirii had applied to his guild and that he was simply coming over to validate the authenticity of Izirii’s application.

The now identified guild officer was thankful of us informing him about what Izirii had done to us, but not only that wanted to help us get our revenge as well since he could feel our pain.  So to make a long story short the other guild said they would tell Izirii that his application was approved, ask him to go ahead and make the server transfer, and that they couldn’t wait to get him on the team.  After Izirii made the transfer thinking he had made a clean getaway they quickly told him they were aware of what he did to us, and that they had no use for him in their guild.  Now Iz couldn’t transfer for another 30 days being stuck on that other server where everyone already knew about him, and yes we were already there waiting for him as well.  Now honestly this wasn’t half of what we would have liked to do to Izirii but honestly we cost him the 25$ ruined his name on 2 servers, the whole fiasco was published in several places across the web and if anyone delves into Izirii’s past they will quickly find out about what he did.  This forced him into spending another 25$ for a name change, and he was also forced to sit by without getting any raid time for about 2 months.

There are 2 morals to this story. One is to be careful about screwing over people especially guildies as it can come back to haunt you in the future.  Two be sure to check into your guild applicants as you may find someone like Iz trying to join your guild and possible do the same thing to you as he did to his last guild. Ohh yeah well I guess there is three REVENGE IS SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!
